WEGO Students Fostering Cultural Exchanges with Pen Pals
For our grade six students with pen pals from the Archer School for Girls, Los Angeles, this was their last time to communicate with each other. Our students finished off with a bang and recorded and edited their own videos of them singing Chinese and English pop songs. Their pen pals were truly touched when they watched the videos and a few were even brought to tears! Our students have had such a blast these past two years interacting with their new friends by writing letters, recording video messages and exchanging handcraft gifts with each other. A highlight for our students was receiving a wooden dragonfly gift with their Chinese name engraved on a wing. Students also received an indigo tie dye cloth that their pen pals made for them. We will never forget these memories.
On the other side of the world in Japan, our students have also been busy communicating with their friends writing about their favorite food. This semester we are going to start having new students participate with Keio Elementary School, Tokyo. They will be recording their self-introductions, while our grade five students will be writing about their favorite places in Taiwan. Having a pen pal is an excellent way to learn English.
